About the book

Traditional advertising, from the TV commercial that cuts into a program to the sales call during a family dinner, rests on the hope of seizing attention people never offered. Seth Godin calls this Interruption Marketing and argues that it no longer works. In its place he proposes Permission Marketing: giving consumers incentives to accept advertising voluntarily, and reaching only those who have signaled interest in learning more about a product. According to Godin, this approach lets companies form long-term relationships with customers, earn trust, raise brand awareness and improve their chances of a sale. The book first introduced permission marketing as a concept, built on messages that people anticipate and that are personal and relevant to them.

Sumo founder Noah Kagan put it on his list of 18 books that changed his life. GrowthMentor founder Foti Panagio named it in a background reading list he suggests, alongside books on innovation and leadership.
