Patricia Lockwood's father was a married Lutheran minister who became a Catholic and then one of the rare Roman Catholic priests with a wife. She began the memoir after financial trouble and illness sent her and her husband back to live in her father's rectory, ten years after they had set up on their own. It moves between their eight months in her parents' household, where a seminarian also lived, and scenes from her childhood and adolescence, among them an ill-fated family hunting trip, her father's arrest at an abortion clinic sit-in, and a cultlike Catholic youth group. The book swings from raunchy to serious, exploring belief, belonging and family. Its honors include the 2018 Thurber Prize for American Humor.
