About the book
Andy Weir's 2021 hard science fiction novel centers on Ryland Grace, who wakes aboard a spacecraft millions of miles from home with no memory of his own name, his mission or how to carry it out, and with two dead crewmates for company. Grace is a science teacher and former biologist, though he wakes unable to recall even that much about himself. Alone on a small ship assembled by every government and space agency on Earth, he faces an extinction-level threat to humanity. It was a 2022 Hugo Award finalist and was adapted into a 2026 film.
Bill Gates called it a fun read that he finished in one weekend, and Andrej Karpathy praised how it balances plausibility with being interesting and entertaining.

It’s a fun read, and I finished the whole thing in one weekend.
One of my top favorite alien portrayals, strikes a good balance between plausible, interesting and entertaining. A thoroughly enjoyable read.
