American writer David Shields argues that people living in a fragmented culture hunger for doses of real life in the art they consume, and that older forms such as the realist novel no longer capture lived experience. The book itself is a collage of 618 numbered passages in twenty-six chapters, about half of the words drawn from other writers, with attributions in an appendix Shields invites readers to cut out. He defends appropriation as something artists have always done, includes a hip-hop chapter covering sampling, and treats the line between memoir and fiction as largely imaginary, with James Frey's scandal looming large in one chapter. Lithub later named it one of the hundred most important books of that decade.
