In Nancy Duarte's view, building a presentation is a little like writing a documentary, and Resonate applies the techniques of story to persuading an audience. She reverses the usual roles, casting the audience as the hero and the presenter as its mentor, and shows how conflict and resolution can drive a talk. The focus is on methods for developing content that moves listeners to act, built on what she presents as the underlying story form of great presentations. It follows her first book, which helped presenters become visual communicators. Duarte's track record includes creating the slides for Al Gore's Oscar-winning An Inconvenient Truth.
Brian Burkhart, founder of SquarePlanet Presentations, said it hit home even though he disagreed with her method, disliked much of it and found it too complex for everyday use, since it helped confirm he was onto something.

But the book which really hit home was “Resonate: Present Visual Stories that Transform Audiences,” by Nancy Duarte. It’s interesting, I didn’t agree with her methodology or like much of what I read. It was too complex and not realistic for people to use in everyday life. That said, it did help confirm to me that I was onto something. It was a different kind of validation than Godin—that the power of a great presentation isn’t just one man’s opinion. There’s real science behind it.
