Dr. H. Gilbert Welch, a recognized expert on early cancer detection, questions one of medicine's most accepted beliefs: that catching cancer early is always the best defense. He weighs common screening tests, including mammograms, PSA tests and total body scans, and argues that testing healthy people cuts both ways: the tests may help, but they often have little effect and are sometimes harmful. Combining patient stories with data on common cancers and little-known research, Welch shows how screening can miss some cancers, lead to invasive and unnecessary treatment, and distract doctors from other issues. He concludes that early detection does not always save lives and that some cancers are better left undiscovered. It is written for the general public.
