About the book
Guy Debord's work of philosophy and Marxist critical theory argues that in modern society authentic social life has been replaced by its representation. Written as 221 short theses of one paragraph each, it develops the concept of the Spectacle: not a set of images but a social relation among people that images mediate. Debord traces a decline from being into having and from having into appearing, and examines commodity fetishism, class alienation, cultural homogenization and mass media, comparing modern marketing to the role religion once played. It is regarded as a central text of the Situationist movement, and Debord later made a film of the same name.
Sanja Zepan, co-founder of Homey, read it in high school and said it changed her plans, leading her to study communicology and media.

The most dramatic change was definitely when I read Guy Debord's The Society of Spectacle in high school. That book made me go study communicology and media, instead of everything else I wanted to study back then. It really cemented my university application.
