About the book
German officer Ernst Jünger's memoir is a graphic account of trench warfare on the Western Front of the First World War, covering his service from December 1914 to August 1918. He enters the line as a private with the 73rd Hanoverian Regiment in Champagne, is first wounded at Éparges, becomes a lieutenant and often commands a company, fighting on the Somme, at Arras and Cambrai, and in Operation Michael in 1918. He was wounded seven times and received the Iron Cross First Class. Readers often see the book as morally ambivalent or even pro-war. Jünger revised it heavily several times, and it established his fame as a writer in the 1920s.
