Entrepreneur Sam Zell sets out the contrarian habits behind his deals, summed up in his advice to look right when everyone else goes left. He describes selling overpriced Playboy magazines to junior high classmates, buying real estate cheaply after a market crash, and backing often unglamorous industries with long-term value. He traces his independent streak largely to his parents, Jewish refugees from World War II. Known as the Grave Dancer for targeting troubled assets, he has sponsored over a dozen IPOs, and the Tribune Company's bankruptcy a year after he took it on set off a media firestorm. His personality shows too, from wearing jeans to work in the 1960s to riding motorcycles with friends known as the Zell's Angels.

Sam Zell’s autobiography Am I Being Too Subtle? was awesome. I was sent a copy by an editor at Penguin Group who sends me books, presumably that he thinks I’ll like. While this was in my infinite pile of books, I grabbed it randomly last night and polished it off tonight.
