About the book
At New York's Art Students League, where he taught from 1915 to 1927, Robert Henri gave his students an attitude toward art rather than a house style. His former pupil Margery Ryerson collected his philosophical and practical musings into the volume, which then stayed in print for decades. It mixes technical advice with reflections on the place of art and of the artist in American society, and it sets down his whole system of teaching. Henri's students included Edward Hopper, George Bellows, Rockwell Kent, Stuart Davis and John Sloan. It is written for artists and art students concerned with how creative work actually gets made.
Jack Dorsey described it as a look at creativity through the eyes of an art student and took from it the idea that mastering one's tools is a constant practice rather than a destination.

The first book is a book called The Art Spirit by Robert Henri, who was a painter and I know there’s a lot of affinity for painters in these parts. This is about creativity through the lens of an art student. [...] What he means by this is purely you have to be a master of your own tools. That mastership is not a destination, it is a process and it’s constant practice that gets you there.
