Thi Bui's 2017 debut graphic memoir traces her parents' lives before and during the Vietnam War, their flight from the country in the 1970s after South Vietnam fell, and their arrival in the United States as refugees when she was a child. The project began with oral history interviews she recorded with her parents for a master's thesis; she then spent a decade teaching herself to draw comics. Becoming a mother herself, she also learns what being a parent means. Bui names Maus and Persepolis as influences and offers a view of the war different from the one in American films and textbooks. Themes include parenthood, belonging, home and how relatives remember the same events differently.
