About the book

Julius Caesar recounts his conquest of Gaul, which spanned most of what is now France, Belgium and Switzerland, and his invasion of Britain. Written in the third person while he was on campaign, the narrative covers the Gaulish revolt led by Vercingetorix, fighting with the Germanic Suebi, the Belgae alliance and a clash with Cassivellaunus and his Britons. Caesar also describes the dress, religion, customs and animals of the Gauls and Germans and compares the two peoples. Books 1 to 7 are his; book 8 is by his general Aulus Hirtius, written after Caesar's death. Modern historians treat the work as propaganda prone to exaggeration, yet it remains the primary source for the conflict.
