The long slide toward the Second World War opens the six-volume history of that conflict by Winston S. Churchill. The narrative runs from the Treaty of Versailles through the rise of Adolf Hitler and the capitulation at Munich to Britain's entry into the war, examining along the way the failure of appeasement, the spread of totalitarian regimes and the misjudgments of the European powers. Churchill blends autobiography with historical analysis and sets his retrospective judgments beside memos, letters, orders, speeches and telegrams from the time. He presents the war as largely senseless yet unavoidable. The volume contributed to his 1953 Nobel Prize in Literature, and a 2002 BBC and HBO television film borrowed its title.
