About the book
In 1757, with the French and Indian War under way, James Fenimore Cooper's historical romance follows an attempt to bring Cora and Alice, daughters of Colonel Munro, to the post he commands, Fort William Henry near Lake George in New York. Their party includes the frontier scout Natty Bumppo, known as Hawkeye, Major Duncan Heyward, a singing teacher named David Gamut, and two Mohicans, Chingachgook and his son Uncas, who give the novel its title. The events unfold around the French siege of the fort, a real episode of the Seven Years' War. It is the second of Cooper's five Leatherstocking Tales, and since its 1826 publication it has been adapted many times for stage, film and cartoons.
Tim Ferriss put it among his favorite and most impactful reads of 2021, saying he had loved it and had finished it only the day before.
