About the book
From 2025, the Ministry for the Future, a Zurich-based body created under the Paris Agreement, works to defend the world's future generations as if their rights mattered as much as those of people living now. Kim Stanley Robinson's climate novel follows its head, Mary Murphy, once Ireland's foreign minister, and Frank May, an aid worker from the United States traumatized after living through a deadly heat wave in India. Between their stories, many chapters give accounts of future events by mostly unnamed characters, along with their ideas on ecology and economics and stretches of nonfiction history. Robinson builds from present-day technologies, economies and societies, and his attention to scientific accuracy places the book within hard science fiction.
Bill Gates chose it for his 2022 summer reading list, saying he was glad he had picked it up and calling it terrific.
