Bethany McLean and Peter Elkind, both senior writers at Fortune, trace how Enron climbed from obscurity to the top of American business and then collapsed into what was then the largest bankruptcy in US history. McLean had questioned the company's valuation in a March 2001 Fortune article asking whether Enron was overpriced, and the book also recounts how the pair tracked the story. Their account draws on hundreds of interviews plus e-mails, calendars and performance reviews. Ken Lay, Jeff Skilling and Andy Fastow appear alongside lesser-known players such as Rebecca Mark. First published in 2003, it became a New York Times best seller and the basis of the 2005 documentary Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room.
