From the notebooks he kept through the 1970s, Duncan Hannah's book reports on his years as an art student in New York City. Hannah, later a celebrated painter, came to the city from Minneapolis early in the decade, eager for experience and willing to try almost anything. His entries record a large appetite for drugs, alcohol, girls, movies, books, parties and rock and roll, along with plenty of bad behavior and open ambition. The account is at times lurid and catches an era when standards of taste and decorum were falling away. David Bowie, Andy Warhol and Patti Smith are among the figures who turn up in its pages.
Austin Kleon loved it, noting it was edited from the diaries Hannah kept as a young man in New York, though he wished it had included pictures of the notebooks, which he found very visual.

I loved this book, which was edited from Hannah’s actual diaries that he kept as a young man in 70s NYC. My only gripe is that the book doesn’t include images of the actual notebooks, which are wonderfully visual.
