About the book

E. B. Sledge's memoir describes front-line infantry combat in the Pacific War, drawn from notes he kept tucked inside a pocket-sized Bible through the battles of Peleliu and Okinawa. Serving as a 60 mm mortarman with K Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, he records the fear, fatigue, filth, disease and climate of island fighting. Sledge writes plainly about the brutality of Japanese soldiers, the hatred on both sides and the trophy-taking by some Marines, and traces how combat stripped men of compassion. Its working titles were A Marine Mortarman in World War II and Into The Abyss. The memoir later informed Ken Burns's documentary The War and the HBO miniseries The Pacific.

James Mattis said Sledge spoke for generations of grunts with his account of brutal combat on Okinawa and of the bonds formed between men in battle.
