About the book
Nikos Kazantzakis's 1946 novel opens in a cafe in Piraeus, where a young Greek intellectual, stung by a departing friend's words, resolves to set his books aside for a few months. He heads for Crete to reopen a disused lignite mine and hires as foreman Alexis Zorba, a man of about sixty born in Macedonia who claims skill as a chef, a miner and a santouri player. Zorba's talk on the way sets the tone, and in long talks about life, religion and their pasts the narrator learns what his books never taught him. The story was adapted into a 1964 film directed by Michael Cacoyannis and also reworked for the stage as a musical and for BBC radio.
Tim Ferriss named it among the five books that influenced him most, saying it helps calm a Type A drive so a person can actually enjoy the ride.

Zorba the Greek' is a really good read for trying to chill out that Type A drive ... piece of yourself, so that you can actually enjoy the ride.
