About the book
Chris Guillebeau, who has never held a conventional job or drawn a regular paycheck, identified 1,500 people whose businesses earn at least $50,000 after starting on a small investment, often $100 or less. From that pool he chose 50 case studies to examine closely. Most founders had no special skills; they found a personal interest others would pay for and reshaped their lives around it. Guillebeau's core idea is the overlap between what someone knows how to do and what customers want to buy. A venture, he argues, can start small and needs neither an MBA, a formal plan nor staff. It reached the New York Times hardcover advice best seller list.
Zappos chief executive Tony Hsieh endorsed it as a guide showing that turning an idea into a business can be easier than expected, and Codie Sanchez named it among 15 money books worth reading out of roughly 200 she has read.

This book consists of case studies from people who have built successful businesses with little or no initial outlay. Personally, I believe that startups put far too much emphasis on seeking outside investment, and often create unsustainable businesses as a result. I built my own business gradually with no external investment, and appreciate the fact that books such as 'The $100 Startup' show that this is a viable alternative.
