Barbara Oakley's guide to learning grows out of her own failures: she flunked high school math and science and enlisted in the army straight after graduation. Finding that weak technical skills limited her options in the military and beyond, she went back to school determined to retrain her brain, and is now an engineering professor. Math, she argues, calls for creative as well as analytical thinking, since many problems can be solved several ways; the Pythagorean theorem alone has over three hundred known proofs. Grinding at a problem nonstop works poorly, while stepping away lets the brain's more relaxed side take over. The methods apply to any hard subject. It accompanies the Coursera course Learning How to Learn.
