About the book

Enzo, the dog who narrates Garth Stein's novel, believes the legend that a dog who is ready will come back in his next life as a man. He has prepared by watching television and listening closely to his owner, Denny Swift, a race car driver who also works at a Seattle BMW dealership. From Denny he learns that the techniques of the race track apply to the rest of life. Near the end of his own life, Enzo looks back on everything the Swift family has been through. Published in 2008, the novel stayed on the New York Times list for 156 weeks and was filmed in 2019 with Kevin Costner voicing Enzo.

Investor Fabrice Grinda included it among the books he recommends, and Small Wins Consulting founder AnneMarie Schindler named it her favorite book outside business, saying it gave her a perspective she lacked as a new dog owner.

Audrey Niffenegger's "The Time Traveler's Wife" and Garth Stein's "The Art Of Racing In The Rain" made me cry.

Craig Pearce (Co-Founder/Kid Genius)

Prior to getting into books about business and startups, I read mostly fictional books, and mostly about dogs (think Marley and Me or The Art of Racing In The Rain).

Most of the books I read are business related (I'm sure that says something about me) but my favorite non-business book is The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein. I never had a pet growing up. Then, I decided to make a cross-country move and get my first dog. Someone recommended the book to me in my early days of pet parenthood and it gave me a perspective I was really lacking. Years later, I still reflect on its creativity, perspective, and how it captures the arch of life.
