About the book
David Brooks argues that a single skill lies beneath every healthy person, family, school, organization and society: the ability to see another person deeply and make them feel seen, valued and understood. Humans, he notes, do this poorly, and many people around them feel invisible and misunderstood. He asks what kind of attention to give someone, which conversations to have, and which parts of a person's story deserve notice. To answer, Brooks draws on psychology and neuroscience as well as theater, philosophy, history and education, and he argues that seeing another person is a creative act. He also offers the approach as a possible remedy for a society split by fragmentation, hostility and misperception.
Bill Gates, recommending it for summer 2024, said he had liked Brooks's earlier book The Road to Character but thought this one was even better.
