About the book
Iris Murdoch's novel is told by Charles Arrowby, a celebrated London theatre director who retires to a damp, isolated house on the coast to swim, eat revolting meals and write his memoirs. He hopes to leave a life of turbulent love affairs behind, but by the sea he glimpses what he takes for a sea monster and then meets Mary Hartley Fitch, the first love he has not seen since adolescence. Though she is now old and barely recognizable, he becomes obsessed with her. It won the 1978 Booker Prize.
Writer Alina Varlanuta, creator of The Hole in Your Head, listed the disturbing sea of Iris Murdoch's novel among her favourite characters in fiction.
