The Son

Set in Texas across two centuries, Philipp Meyer's novel follows the McCulloughs through three generations. Eli is a boy when a Comanche band raids his family's homestead and takes him captive. His son, Peter, and his great-granddaughter, J.A., carry the other strands of the narrative as the family rises into a ranching and oil dynasty. It is Meyer's second novel, loosely planned as the middle of a thematic trilogy on the American myth that began with American Rust. In 2017 the novel was adapted into a television series starring Pierce Brosnan as Eli.

Ryan Holiday wrote a bookstore sign comparing it with the show Yellowstone and judged the novel the better of the two.
