About the book

The view held by many modern economists, that speculation is benign and rational, is what Edward Chancellor sets out to challenge. His history of stock-market speculation is told through the dealings, some wise and some foolish, of figures as varied as Benjamin Disraeli, Ivan Boesky, Daniel Defoe and Hillary Rodham Clinton. Chancellor contends that speculators answer to a broader set of human urges and ambitions than fear, greed or money alone. The troubles of America after the 1929 crash and of Japan in the 1990s point the other way, and some commentators, George Soros among them, fear a global financial crisis.

Howard Marks, co-chairman of Oaktree Capital Management, named it among his favorite books about market excesses.

Howard Marks (Co-chairman/Oaktree Capital Management)

There are a lot of lessons to be learned from 1929, along the lines of my favorite books about market excesses: A Short History of Financial Euphoria by John Kenneth Galbraith (1994) and Devil Take the Hindmost: A History of Financial Speculation by Edward Chancellor (2000).
